The different allergy labels in common use may be confusing consumers instead of helping them decide whether to buy a food product, a new Canadian study shows.

"We should narrow (various allergy labels) to only one which will be clear," said Dr. Moshe Ben-Shoshan, a professor of allergy and immunology at McGill University Health Center in Montreal, who worked on the study.

Although all these labels warn that a product could harm a person with allergies, they present that message in various ways. Researchers found that some labels are less effective than others in helping consumers to avoid potentially dangerous foods.

How many times do they have to hear this before they change the labelling laws? I've seen studies like this with similar results time and time again...

Wouldn't it be nice if they had some sort of stop light label for allergies:
List the top 10 allergens (and gluten) with coloured dots next to them
Red = contains
Yellow = may contain, made in same facility, shared equipment, etc -> consumer to investigate further, if desired
Green = no allergen present in the facility

For example:
red dot (contains) - wheat, soy, dairy, gluten
yellow dot (may contain) - peanuts, tree nuts
green dot (does not contain) - fish, shellfish, egg, sesame, mustard

It doesn't have to be confusing.

anaphylaxis to tree nuts, peanuts, potato, wheat, sorghum; asthmatic, dairy intolerant, vegan
other family members allergic to to dairy, egg, peanut, peach, sesame, environmentals

me: allergic to crustaceans plus environmental
teenager: allergic to hazelnuts, some other foods and environmental
