Mom accused of killing peanut-allergic daughter by feeding her M&Ms

M&M's that contained traces of peanuts are at the center of the case against a Long Island woman who now finds herself charged with second-degree murder in the death of her disabled and allergic 8-year-old daughter.

Veronica Cirella, 31, of Plainview, N.Y., pleaded not guilty Wednesday and was ordered held without bail in the July 23, 2011 death of her daughter, Julie, who was found hours before she was set to be a flower girl in a cousin's wedding. ... -her-m-ms/

I have to hope that she was uneducated on the signifcance of "May contain" rather than this was intentional.

It is yet another tragic story that us allergy families have to explain the rationale for our precautions.

My heart aches for this mom.

Thanks for sharing this Mary. I had read about it when it hit the news last summer, but this has more information.

Her defence sounds very likely to me. If someone wanted to commit murder by peanut, they wouldn't use a "may contain".

Very sad for the child.

The majority of parents I know with ana kids (epis/medic alert bracelets) do allow some may contains, or grocery store baked/bulk goods. I always find it appalling, but it is not up to me to change other people's habits. I do share my view with them, but many have been at this for much longer, and some even have medical backgrounds.
