Verified by the folks at (busters of urban legends):

A friend sent me an email about this, and apparently it's true. Hand sanitizers (such as Purell) are said to have 62% alcohol in them. The email from my friend - also on - said that a child got very sick from licking it off her hands. (Bleah.)

Apparently there is a very real risk of a small child becoming intoxicated or even suffer from blood alcohol poisoning if they ingest it.

So not only is the stuff not effective against allergens, it has this risk as well. I will tell my kids that there is yet another positive thing about being allergic!! No risk of becoming sick from licking hand sanitizer off your hands.

Purell has had an alcohol warning on it for as long as I can remember. At least one of the people that got sick actually attempted drinking it. Like all potent cleansers and medications, this should be kept out of reach of children, and used only under supervision of an adult.

I will continue to use it because it's great for washing off germs on picnics, and when my hands get sticky while shopping.

I agree, there was research done, and hand cleansers do NOT remove allergens. Proteins need to be removed, not killed.

self: allergy to sesame seeds and peanuts
3 sons each with at least one of the following allergies: peniciilin, sulfa-based antibiotic, latex, insect bites/stings
