Talking Allergies

I took my kids to the waterpark the other day and we were all in the water for 4 hours. My oldest daughter was the only one who had severe issues with her eyes. They were horribly blood shot, watery and were stinging. Which also made her nose run too. They still looked pretty bad the next morning too. Eye drops didn't help them.

Chlorine burns my throat a bit just breathing it in and being there for 4 hours but not getting my head wet, my eyes did feel irritated when we left so I can imagine her discomfort but the rest of the children were fine. Go figure

I think it's pretty common...especially among kids who are brave and stick their head in a lot with their eyes open. Is she willing to wear goggles?

I think so and I am sure we will have to do that; it seemed unbearable!

wow, i had similar reactions as a kid, i hated gettign my face wet, now when i go to friends' pools i tend to leave my glasses on, cause that way no one dunks me or splashes me

something that i think is really interested in is that canadian tire now has system that uses salt instead of clorine to clean pools, i'd post up a link but the site won't let you go to www.canadiantire.ca then put your postal code (hence why it always brings you back to the main site) then search "pool salt" it looks pretty interesting to me hopefully the idea will be picked up on due to so many people going green *crosses fingers*

Dustytiger, I have seen that salt thing before. Some pools are actually switching to salt...there is one in a city 90 minutes from us in a hotel.

Keegans mommy, do you have a pool in your area that uses salt?

Oh I wish! This is a huge waterpark we have season tickets to so we need to be prepared for the rest of the season. Glad to know that we aren't the only ones burning here, well, sorry to know there are others but you know what I mean.

My sons and myself also get really irritated by chlorine in pool water...the burning itchy eyes you mentioned, as well as burning itchy skin, sore throats and headaches. We find that the length of time we spend in the pool is a key factor. An hour to an hour and a half seems to be our max for enjoying a swim without getting too miserable afterwards. So you may have to limit your daughters time in the pool.
We also shower off really, really, really well as soon as we get out of the water.

Keegan's Mommy...I seem to remember that one of your children has corn allergy. Is this the one that is reacting to the pool water? A lot of people with corn allergy have problems with pools because of the citric acid (almost always made from corn) used to keep the pools clean.
