I recently called Quaker regarding the plain brown rice cakes and potential for "may contain" egg as I had noted that other Quaker rice cakes contain egg. As it turns out, the products containing egg are run on the same line (with thorough cleaning in-between runs); however, because our son is anaphylactic to egg, they recommended that he should not eat the plain brown rice cakes. I was grateful for their forthright honesty. There is not a "may contain" statement on the packaging, but I was concerned based on some of the other available rice cakes.

That is pretty much how we deduce whether or not something may have undeclared cross-contamination. If similar products from the same company contain the allergen, we typically write it off - often without calling.

I am actually quite surprised you got an answer out of Quaker, too. They weren't quite so forthcoming when I called them after a mystery reaction, seeing if there was possible contamination in something I ate. (Sure enough, they had just came out with a nutty flavour but didn't label may contains on other flavours.)

anaphylaxis to tree nuts, peanuts, potato, wheat, sorghum; asthmatic, dairy intolerant, vegan
other family members allergic to to dairy, egg, peanut, peach, sesame, environmentals
