This is terrible news for those of us who are allergic to corn. It appears that ALL sugar no matter the source will soon just be labelled as "sugar". It used to be that when "sugar" appeared on a label, it had to be beet or cane sugar.

"Sugar-based ingredients (like glucose-fructose, honey, malted barley or fancy molasses) will be grouped under the name "sugars" in the list of ingredients."

This new law should be very worrisome for everyone. Corn syrup is MUCH cheaper than any other sugar so I guarantee you that it will be the main type of "sugar" in any/all products that list "sugar".

Current law for listing "sugar" on a label:

Sugar

FDA specifically defines the term sugar whenever it is listed in an ingredient statement. FDA restricts use of the term sugar to sucrose which is obtained from sugar cane or sugar beets. Sugar (sucrose) is included in the term “sugars” listed in the NFP.
