A prescription asthma medication for children is being recalled because it contained less of the active drug than labelled, Health Canada said Friday.

Montreal-based Paladin Labs Inc. makes Zaditen, which is recalling lot No. 440494. The drug comes in blister packages of 14 tablets in one-milligram doses.

The lot was found to contain less of the active pharmaceutical ingredient that offer therapeutic benefits, called ketotifen, than indicated on the label, Health Canada said.

Using tablets from this lot could result in side-effects, such as worsening of asthma symptoms in people with a stable condition.

"Consumers are advised not to use them and to consult their pharmacist for replacement Zaditen tablets or their physician if they have new or worsening symptoms," the agency said in a release.

Zaditen is approved for use as an add-on medication in the chronic treatment of mild asthma in children. It also comes in syrup form, but only tablets from lot No. 440494 are affected by the recall.

No adverse reactions from use of the product have been reported in Canada. ... l-lot.html
