I know that some people who are allergic to soy avoid the protein but not lecithin or soy oil and some people have to totally avoid soy. Is soy-derived Vitamin E in the category with lecithin and soy oil or with soy protein?

Yes.

I react to soy derived vitamin E, soy lecithin, and soybean oil.

Soy-derived vitamin E is often carried in soybean oil.

I *sometimes* react to soy-derived mono&diglycerides.

Incidentally, there have been studies which show that soy lecithin and soybean oil DO sometimes contain allergenic proteins which trigger reactions in some people. They still haven't identified all the potentially allergenic proteins in soy.

Thanks for the reply. sounds like it is just safest to avoid vitamin E. Lecithin used to bother my throat very slightly on occasion...and I thought that soy oil did a bit too. (I'm using the past tense here because I don't eat anything with lecithin or soy oil in it anymore). My soy allergy isn't as severe as my nut allergy, and I don't think that vitamin E has ever bothered me, but it is probably better to err on the side of caution.

I was wondering how do you know if the Vitamin E is derived from soy? I can't get a straight answer from companys. It seems they don't know for sure.

I ask the companies---if they don't know, perhaps you could ask them if they could research the question and get back to you? It is one of the top allergens so companies *should* be able to get the info., I would think/hope.

I've heard that synthetic vitamin E is fine . .the natural stuff is mostly from soy or wheat. I can actually tolerate soy-derived vitamin E in my multivitamin and my lip gloss (although I realize that others can't).

My allergist had me do an "oral challenge" in his office when I wanted to try a multivitamin with vitamin E (just in case the experiment didn't go well) and I've been taking that multivitamin ever since.
