For Christmas Day, I was making the Sun-dried Tomato Hummus from the Winter AL. I got hubby to pick up some jarred minced garlic to make the prep even easier, and therein lay the problem. It contains soybean oil! It wasn't until I had already added almost everything and one Tbsp of the garlic that I checked the jar because I thought it looked oily.

Both hubby and I are such dedicated label-readers, but we sure slipped up on this one! We were surprised that there was anything but garlic in the jar anyway. Luckily we didn't learn the hard way, but it was awfully sad to have to send the unsafe batch of pretty looking hummus away from our gathering.

Just wanted to share that in case anyone is thinking of using the product. I haven't yet checked to see if any other brands are clean.

Marla - have you see the cubes of crushed frozen garlic? We find them in a tiny freezer in our fruit & veggie section of our Loblaws. See for a picture.

At least you won't have to worry about oil!

Karen, I don't know if I understood your post correctly...but wanted to say the Toppits garlic that you provided the link for also contains soybean oil.

My mother is allergic to soy, so I've been searching for a soy-free minced garlic, and I found one recently at Costco. It's made by "Spice World" and the ingredients are as follows: garlic, water, phosphoric acid. Spice World is a U.S. company. Their website is:
