If our son (allergic to all nuts) is to attend a specific school he would have to ride the school bus at age 5. I don't feel safe with him on a bus with the only adult supervision being a driver busy with driving and perhaps other issues such as behavior etc. A bus can have up to 70 kids or so.

What I would love is an adult monitor who could deal with various issues including watching out for allergic kids.

Anyone have any thoughts? Know of a way to push for a monitor?

Our daughter also rides the school bus she has since JK (3 years old).
Check with the school to see is a bus safety program is offered it is often offered to first time riders in the late summer. This lets your child know what to expect. You might get to ride on the bus to the school as a trial run and you can point out your concerns to your son.
Make sure the bus company has the information regarding your sons allergies and that they are trained on how to respond to an anaphylaxis reaction.
Ask them what measures they have taken/will take to avoid exposure.
Our daughter was originally paired with another allergic child and they sat at the front of the bus. Now she sits with her friends.
There is no eating on the bus-period.
Each child is different so each situation is different. Our child is very cautious and we feel comfortable with the way things are. She is also one of the last picked up and one of the first dropped off. Our bus driver is very by the book and runs a tight ship, er, bus.

Daughter: asthma, allergies to egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, most legumes (not soy and green beans) & penicillin. Developing hayfever type allergies.
Husband: no allergies
Me: Oral Allergy Syndrome, Allergic to Birch trees
