Adkins' work pays off with allergy bill to help children

Long before Trace Adkins appeared on NBC's Celebrity Apprentice, he and wife Rhonda were devoted to helping children who suffer from life-threatening food allergies, like their daughter, Brianna.

They've worked for six years on raising awareness; the last three have been focused on lobbying to get legislation to protect kids. Their hard work paid off on Monday, when U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker announced that they're co-sponsoring legislation that would help schools protect more than 2.2 million children nationwide, including 41,000 Tennesseans, who suffer from such allergies. On hand at Monday's announcement were representatives from the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, which Trace represented on Celebrity Apprentice.

Lamar says this bill will provide guidelines and grants that will help schools prevent emergencies and be prepared should one occur. The senators say Brianna's school, Edmonson Elementary, has the type of program that the bill will help develop in other schools.

Why is it that Canada starts something and the USA surpass us at it? This happened with food labels and now with school policies.

While I am happy for the American students who will be safer because of this...I can't help but feel frustrated for Canadian students who still don't have protection.

Daughter: asthma, allergies to egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, most legumes (not soy and green beans) & penicillin. Developing hayfever type allergies.
