VICTORIA—The Campbell government has broken its promise to protect children with life-threatening anaphylactic allergies in schools, New Democrat Education critic David Cubberley said today.

“Another school year has begun, and anaphylactic children still aren’t getting the protection they deserve in the classroom,” said Cubberley, MLA for Saanich-South. “The Campbell government promised that they would put a framework in place by September, so that when kids came back to school, they would be protected by the best possible safety practices.

“Education Minister Shirley Bond has not kept that promise. She doesn’t care about the uncertainty and anxiety her lack of action has caused for anaphylactic students and their families.”

This past spring, Cubberley introduced a Private Members’ Bill to protect students with anaphylaxis while in school. The Anaphylactic Student Protection Act would provide education, awareness, and preventative measures to support the more than 13,000 anaphylactic school-aged children across B.C.

“It is not too late for Minister Bond to adopt the NDP’s legislation as her own and pass it as part of the fall session of the Legislature,” said Cubberley. “At this point, all parents want is for the Minister to keep her promise and protect these kids.”

Organizations supporting Cubberley’s Bill include the B.C. Principals and Vice-Principals Association, B.C. Ambulance Paramedics, Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, the Fraser Health Authority, the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, as well as various school districts, teachers’ associations and parent advisory councils.
