Health Canada is reminding Canadians, including parents and caregivers, about health risks associated with the use of topical benzocaine products, including a rare but potentially serious blood condition known as methemoglobinemia (MetHb).

It's in OraJel & Anbesol products, Auralgan (ear drops), in some formulations of Polysporin ointment / cream (+pain relief versions), and Polysporin EAR drops (new product ... separate from the former eye/ear combination drops), among others. It will always be listed on the label of a topical product, so just look past the brand name and find the ingredients list. It will always be listed as an active ingredient. It's very common.

The risk of this condition is so rare that it would not stop me from recommending any of the products(which I do - for burns, toothaches where a dentist is not available, and painful chancres) , but it's good to be aware of what to look for.

If you've used Oral Jel or Anbesol on your baby's gums during teething, you've used benzocaine.
