Thought you might enjoy this col. in the Victoria Times-Colonist. It's by Vivian Smith, a former colleague of mine at the Globe, who now lives and writes in Victoria. (And has contributed to Allergic Living mag.)

As I fuss over this column, I think how lovely it would be to have a dog curled up by my feet. I have a home office, so the dog -- a mid-sized mongrel with a long tail that beats on the floor when I talk to her -- wouldn't bother anyone. She'd sniff the air when she senses the muse has flown and nudge my toes helpfully. Why is this mutt a she? I have no idea, except that the dogs we had when I was a kid were always female. Anyway, it doesn't matter. This is a fantasy. I love dogs, but they return my affection by making me sneeze.
One of my aunts used to tell me that my allergies were all in my head. She was right, to the extent that when my allergies kick up, it's my head that spits tears and watery mucus. That is not what she meant, of course. She insisted my suffering must be self-induced, because she didn't have allergies.
Sorry, but it's not my fault that I wheeze around dogs, cats and horses, among other things. My eyes stream and itch; my lungs feel as though someone is sitting on them; my throat feels lined with furballs
