I had a bad reaction to raw apples about a year ago and was told I had oral allergy syndrome. I have not eaten a raw apple since but can eat applesauce etc. no problem. I have also had smaller reactions to raw peaches and plums but again, I can eat cooked ones no problem.

I had a small reaction the other day and I think it was from avocado. I came home and googled it, and sure enough, avocado is in the birch family, so it seems likely this was the issue.

I am worried now because other foods I enjoy are also in the birch family. If I started reacting to banana, I would have only like two fruits left I could eat! I have been eating banana with no problems that I know if, but then again, I had 25 years of eneventful apple eating before this suddenly came up, so...

Any tips? Suggestions? Anyone else dealing with this?

Asthma and eczema
Drug allergy (succinylcholine)
Food (corn, raw apples, green beans, tree nuts, flax)
Misc (pollen, grass, mold, dogs, cats)

Not sure if mine is OAS but sometimes I can eat fruits without problem like now :) but in the summer - either when pollen is out or eating more fruit - I get itchy mouth with some so then I stop eating them (apple, banana, grapefruit, peach, pear).

me: allergic to crustaceans plus environmental
teenager: allergic to hazelnuts, some other foods and environmental

I can't eat apples with the skin on but I can if I peel them first.
Grapes unless I wash them really well and even then it's hit or miss.

Fichbot-don't go borrowing trouble. Just because you can't eat some fruits from that family doesn't mean you will develop an allergy to all of them. Just take it day by day. :)

Daughter: asthma, allergies to egg, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, most legumes (not soy and green beans) & penicillin. Developing hayfever type allergies.
Husband: no allergies
Me: Oral Allergy Syndrome, Allergic to Birch trees
