Do you need to eat an allergen first, in order to receive a positive skin test result? i.e. could you be allergic to walnuts, but receive a negative skin test prick because you haven't ingested them yet?

You can be come allergic to a food that you don't believe you have come in contact with because of trace ammounts on foods which you have eaten in the past.

The first time you ingest a food to which you develop an allergy, your body creates antibodies to fight the percieved threat. The next time you eat a food, the anti-bodies go to work creating a chain of events which result in an allergic reaction.

False positives have happened and false negatives can happen if the serum is old. Some people find that with certain fish serums they do better to bring fresh samples of the allergen.

An experienced Allergist should be aware of the chance of false test results in relation to your description of the symptoms.
