Post subject:  Zucchini allergy? Nothing at all? Questions!

Hi everyone,
I've noticed when I eat zucchini (especially quite often at this time of year), I get a weird feeling. I have no idea if it's OAS, something common to zucchini, or nothing at all. I'll try to describe it.

It feels like there is a sudden coating on my lips, and that they swell. I don't think they actually are swelling, and if they do, it doesn't seem to last long. It's weird to describe and not painful. I eat them anyway because I am not sure if this is normal.

I guess it's difficult to describe, but has anyone felt anything weird when they eat zucchini? Maybe it's just like, say, persimmons that have tannins that make you pucker. But I am just not certain.

Hmm, sounds like Oral Allergy Syndrome as you suggest - especially may be worse right now because ragweed pollen season is starting, and zucchini is in that family.

I'd see an allergist, though to test to be sure. You can also have a more serious form of allergy.
Better to know, and also whether you have to watch out for any other foods.

See this article, and the related "cross-reactors chart" that's mentioned:

FYI, the story suggests you "can" react to related veg, fruits if it is OAS. This doesn't mean you necessarily will. Some OASers only get reactions with a couple of veg/fruits on their list.

Hope that helps you.

Thank you for the information. Interesting article!

If I see an allergist, what types of test(s) should I make sure he/she does? I haven't seen one in years, and I just want to be sure I receive the correct testing done.
