Post subject:  French words for Hazelnuts and tree nuts

My daughter will be travelling to France soon and we are looking for any forms of "Hazelnuts" or "Tree Nuts" in French.

While looking at the McDonald's website we were surprised to see "Fruits à coques" for Tree Nuts.

Does anyone know of any words besides these ones?

Fruits à coques = nuts

Noix = nuts

Noisettes = Hazelnuts
Avelines = Filberts
Cobnut = Cobnut

Praline = praliné
Nutella = Nutella

I was curious about this because I remember a little French, and now have a child with a tree nut allergy, for sure pistachio and cashew. I used this French dictionary online http://www.french-linguistics.co.uk/dic ... ishfrench/. I am wary of making a list because I am not an expert...I just plugged in all the tree nuts in the English to French box.

I hope the link will work for you. It seems like a lot of the words would be a combo of noix (nut) and then a word like Bresil for Brazil. Maybe a French speaking person from Canada can help :D

Good luck!

Julie

The word "nut" in French is difficult to translate as it means both "walnut" and the generic term for nuts (all sorts). Therefore, it is important to specify "fruits à coque" for clarification ("coque" means "shell").

To confuse things further, tree nuts can also be translated as "noisettes", which also means hazelnuts.

For France, your daughter shoud always specify "fruits à coque" and stay away from all nuts in general, even the ones she is not allergic to. There is too much confusion with the vocabulary.

Bon voyage!

If you have time you could order french cards from
www.selectwisely.com
I have ordered from them and was VERY pleased they even made personal cards for me as I needed them to have coconut on them.
Hope your daughter enjoys the trip.

Thank you for the responses.

Her trip to France went great. She carried a double-sided note explaining her allergies; one side was English and the other French. She did stay away completely from tree nuts to be safe.

She will be in Quebec this summer and will need it again :swing

The Avalanche power bars were great as each one is about 300 calories and 10g protein. Her favourite was the Blueberry. They are tree-nut and peanut free. http://www.avalanchebars.com/

walooet,

Can you buy the avalanche bars in stores, or are they only available online? They look good!
