We have been to Maui twice with the kids and the flights on West Jet have been great, leaving mid morning and arriving mid afternoon - awesome. We are looking into going again next Feb/Mar and thinking of another island just to see different stuff. The flights to Oahu (Honolulu) and Maui are both great, but the flights on West Jet to Kauai and the Big Island get there pretty late, or you can get transferring flights on Alaska Air, etc, but either leave at 6am, or arrive late as well. There is the option of changing planes in Honolulu, but because WJ and Hawaiian Air don't have an agreement with each other, it would involve picking up luggage and checking/going through security, etc in a second time after a 6hr flight with the two kids who may or may not be happy at that point.

Big Island is supposed to have excellent snorkeling, and Kauai is supposed to have the best kid friendly beaches, plus these two have cheaper accommodations so you can get a better vacation house for less money.

I'm leaning toward Oahu (but away from the Waikiki Beach area) or Kauai, but the flight gets in at 8pm local time, which would be 11pm our time. We'd then have to retrieve luggage, get our rental car, install carseats, then find our vacation house in the dark. Am I being too cautious, or would this a big pain in the rear? I think Oahu would be way easier with a direct flight getting in at 2pm, but the other family we are going with is pretty keen on Kauai based on friends' recommendations. Thoughts?
