Talking Allergies

I don't have the bottle handy right now to give the exact brand, but I wanted to warn those with egg allergies about this. I was reading the label of a bottle we recently had, and was shocked to see egg whites listed on the label.
Will add the winery name, etc. to this post soon.

It's good that that company is labelling for egg---most don't. Egg white is often used (generally in the more expensive wines I'm told) in the filtering process or something.

I'm sure that I read something about allergens being listed on wine labels in France or Europe.

I am looking into the use of egg whites in the winemaking process. I contacted Cono Sur, Chilean winery, and they responded that no egg white is used in their winemaking process. I will check with each of our favorite wineries. Perhaps I will get more industry insight about the use of egg white in the winemaking process.

I have heard that it is egg shells that are used to clarify wines but I wouldn't know for sure if that is true.

I have contacted a few winerys (North American) and the answer each time was that they said it is common place to use eggs in the "fining" process. I checked and it can be in both Red and White wines and it's not use for just expensive types. I can't remember all that I contacted, but it was enough to say wine is off the list for DS.
Jackson Triggs was one for sure, and some from the Okanogan and Niagara Falls and I believe California. I didn't venture out to Austraila (my favorite) or Chille etc.

It was recommended to look for wines marked Vegan as these will not contain any egg or animal products.

I think it is great to share our findings on this topic. I will continue to contact Chilean wineries via email. I will also be investigating personally when we go to Chile this month.
