A friend recently told me that "allspice" may not be safe for nut-allergic because it can be made up of different things, including nuts.

Has anyone heard this before?

McCormick Spices explains:
So it seems that true allspice is a spice in itself and not a mixture -- but I'm sure people could make their own spice blends and call it allspice so just be cautious of the source.

Allspice is a standardized food product as defined under Section B.07.001 of the Food Regulations. A product represented as Allspice or Pimento must meet the requirements set out in this section. The regulation may be accessed on-line at: ... text-1.pdf

Hello Lance,
I am curious. Do you have allergies or is your interest in our forum just professional? It is great to have someone join us who has expert knowledge of labelling laws. There are so many things to learn just to manage a life threatening allergy. Welcome.

Hi Kate: My eldest son who is now 21 is anaphylactic to milk and eggs; diagnosed at 6 months. Personally, I suffer from oral allergy syndrome and some level of intolerance to other foods including sulphites.

I have been involved with food inspection programs in Canada since 1980, from being a front-line inspector to involvement in developing inspection and monitoring programs and currently working on food policy. When food allergy was recognized as an issue the Canadian government shoud be addressing I was asked to become involved partly based on personal experience. Since 1992, I have had some level of involvement with the food allergy file and continue to do so.

I think the forum is a great resource and an excellent venue to learn some of the views and perspectives of individual allergic shoppers which is applicable to my work. At the same time, where I feel I can provide some helpful answers or poin to existing resources I hope to have time to do so.
