A treatment using radio frequency-induced heat to ease asthma symptoms when drugs don't work could be commercially available by spring, researchers said here.

The method -- dubbed bronchial thermoplasty -- had equivalent efficacy across three randomized clinical trials, according to Curig Prys-Picard, MBBS, PhD, of the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, and colleagues.

In those studies, four out of five patients had an increase of at least half a point on the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, Prys-Picard reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Such an increase is regarded as the clinically significant minimal difference in an individual patient, Prys-Picard said. "You would feel better" with such a change, he said.

Interesting, it sounds like they are treating airway remodelling an outcome of poorly controlled asthma and not really treating the asthma though.
