In two weeks, I will be travelling to the Netherlands with a school exchange program.. I am really excited, but have no idea what to do with the whole peanut allergy thing.. has anyone with a peanut allergy ever been there? Any tips, experiences?
THANKS

Hi Jill,

Feel free to PM me with any specific questions - I'm ana to peanuts, nuts, eggs and shellfish.

I lived in England in my 4th year of undergrad and travelled to Amsterdam and a few neighbouring cities. While this might seem really obvious - the food labels are in Dutch, so be prepared (I wasn't!) I found myself eating a lot of potato chips and at KFC, Pizza Hut and the like. While we did stay at a hostel with a kitchen, it was very small and not particularly clean, and every morning for breakfast they had peanut butter, jam, and Nutella for toast (not great!)

How long is the program for, and can you bring some food? Even like cans of beans, packages of pasta, etc. - things that will last and are easy to prepare - might give you some peace of mind. I did this when I went to Italy and felt much better overall.

Also - in all seriousness - I didn't partake in the "coffee shop" experience while there - since I was so far away from home, I really wanted a clear head at all times so I would know how I was feeling, and wouldn't take any stupid chances. I think this is really something to consider, despite the pressure and appeal of joining in the festivities.
